One month absence

Sorry about that. Creativity levels have been down -- really for more than a month, if you've noticed recent posts. I'm going to have to force myself back into writing.

Early voting started in Nevada yesterday. I waited a day to avoid the long lines and am now civic duty-free. I could post one of those "I Voted" stickers, but instead I'll just ask you to click over to this 2006 entry and change the voting date in your minds.

The best thing about early voting? Now I can, in good conscience, pay NO attention to any campaign commercial, mailing, lawn sign, or phone call I may encounter in the next 16 days. (I was ignoring all of that before today as well, just not in good conscience.)

In other news, while only a casual baseball fan, I find myself pleased with a Phillies-Rays series.* As should you. If free agency has made you lose some interest in baseball, take a look at how well a pair of mostly homegrown teams can perform. Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and NLCS MVP Cole Hamels have played their entire major league careers in Philadelphia. A similar list for Tampa Bay would be even longer; they have the second cheapest payroll in the majors. (The Phillies are 13th overall, but in their defense, they've paid to keep their stars.)

It's just nice to see that teams can succeed by developing the talent within the organization rather than spending top dollar on outside (read: mercenary) talent. The New York Yankees are of course guilty of this -- unless you grew up loving them, you cannot possibly root for them -- but the Boston Red Sox have become equally culpable. While I did not derive that much pleasure from seeing them lose tonight, I was still a bit relieved. To me, they may be eternally entitled to a chip on their collective shoulder, but they gave up any kind of lovable underdog status in 2006, when they spent over $100 million to acquire and sign Daisuke Matsuzaka.

*Sure, it would have been nice to see the Cubs in it, as 100 years is a nice round number, but no one can explain what happened there.

I was selfish in my hopes for Boston last night. The Rays deserve to be there. There I've said it. But I have no desire to watch the series now. none. Once my dreams were dashed for a Sox/Cubs WS (which, along with my Mariners getting into the series are my two dreams for watching baseball) I was kinda done. Now that Boston is out I am. All your reasons are valid I just don't *CARE* anymore.

It's the Cubs. Isn't that explanation enough?

So if you are looking for a great gift idea that most children are really going to enjoy, this would be a great option. This is the classic stuffed animal pillow pets zippity zebra that kids have always loved with a modern twist, which is something that parents and children always love having.
